New York State Independence Party Endorses Paul Tonko for Congress

New York State’s third largest political organization cites Tonko’s record of leadership and results

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, state and local Independence Party leaders announced their unanimous support for Congressman Paul Tonko, who is seeking a third term and will be running in the newly formed 20th Congressional District.

“Congressman Tonko is our chosen candidate,” said Vice Chair Tom Connolly.  “Paul is a known quantity in our region and he has served our community with commitment and integrity for many years.  I am confident that the people of the 20th Congressional District will continue to be well served by the work ethic and dedication of Congressman Tonko.”

“Paul understands the issues that are important to Independence Party voters,” said Vice Chair Paul Caputo.  “Paul’s work on renewable energy and community sustainability issues and his work to develop a competitive, 21st Century economy in the Capital District stood out to our members.  We’re happy to have Paul running with our endorsement.”

“As a Town Supervisor in Saratoga County, it is important that my Member of Congress understands local government,” said Saratoga County Chair and Ballston Town Supervisor Patti Southworth.  “Paul Tonko began his career on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.  He draws upon that experience and expertise each day – making him uniquely qualified to represent our interests in Washington.”

“The Schenectady County Independence Party has had a long-standing relationship with Congressman Tonko,” said Schenectady County Chair Richard Nebollini.  “Paul has shown once again that he is an independent voice that will represent the values of our party in Washington with diligence and integrity.”

“I am honored to have the support of the New York State Independence Party,” said Congressman Tonko.  “With nearly 25,000 active Independence Party members in the new Congressional District, the party’s support shows that we share the same concerns - growing and creating jobs in the area, strengthening the middle class and improving our nation’s energy policy.”

New York’s newly formed 20th Congressional District covers Albany and Schenectady Counties and portions of Montgomery, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties.

This is Tonko’s fifth party endorsement. He previously secured the support of the Working Families Party and the Montgomery, Saratoga and Schenectady Democratic Committees.
